And instead of just throwing on the first clothes you happen to see, some of you out there would rather spend your time carefully picking out a matching ensemble, brushing your hair, powdering and bronzing your face, glossing your lips, and swiping a coat of mascara over your lashes. Don't hide the answer. Yes, you know this is true.
We are an all-girls, boarding and day, Episcopal school. Here at SMS, we don't have a uniform, but a dress code. We are not allowed to wear jeans, or skirts of unreasonable lengths. There is a rule against large logos and sports wear, and don't even dare try to wear flip-flops. Sometimes this can be difficult because I will find myself buying clothes just for school, to fit the dress code, that I would never dare to wear outside of school grounds. This I find to be a waste of money and a problem.
And to every problem, there is a solution. For five years, I attended an all-girls Catholic school. There I wore a plaid skirt and collared shirt to school every day. Girls, let me tell you: this is the best idea ever.
When I heard that we might not have school uniforms at SMS it was... a let down for me. There went my dreams of fewer laundry loads, five more minutes of sleep, and having to forget about matching clothes in the morning.... If we were wearing uniforms here at SMS, they would most likely consist of khaki shorts, skirts, or pants, and a white collared shirt. Then, we all could walk around this campus looking a little bit more uniform.

Why an official school wardrobe? Here are just a few reasons:
Positive values. By providing appropriate clothing choices, St. Margaret's frees young women to focus on who they are and how they act, not just how they look. It also puts an attractive standard of dress within the reach of every school family.
Cost savings. According to the US Department of Agriculture, American families spent from $700 - $1,140 in 1999 to buy clothing for each child aged 12-17. The six required pieces of the SMS wardrobe total only $225.
Student demand. SMS students approached administrators several years ago and asked if they could wear uniforms. Their reasoning? It's easier to comply with the dress code, do laundry, and show school pride.
