Career Internships

"What will I be when I grow up?" It's one of the most difficult questions facing students.
St. Margaret's career internships give students the chance to "test-drive" a career or field before committing to it. Seniors work for two weeks during Minimester on projects of their own design, either at St. Margaret's or in an appropriate off-campus location. Recent students completed internships in government at the Attorney General's and Virginia Governor's offices. Others spent time learning social work, physical therapy, journalism, business, printing, accounting and elementary education. Students worked at the National Archives, National Geographic, Virginia Science Museum, and an outdoor recreation program for visually impaired children. Many projects have led students to learn about other countries - studying school structure at St. Margaret's School in Berwick, Australia, studying Chinese painting in China and following a presidential campaign committee in Taiwan.

"While I'm working with Dr. Angela Stanaway, an equine veterinarian, I want to experience the life of a vet to find out if the career interests me. During the two weeks that I am with Dr. Stanaway, I will assist her in any way I can. It may be helping to hold a horse so she can file its teeth, or it may be helping a mare birth a foal."

"I am suited to do a career internship at the Martin Agency in Richmond because I have always enjoyed being creative. During this two-week period, I hope to gain a working understanding of the creative process in advertising, and also to get a feel for the business world, one of innuendoes and precision. Every day, I will work a full business day, getting to know the Martin Agency for better or for worse."
