Structure and Support

St. Margaret's offers supplemental programs that provide additional opportunities, challenges, structure and support to ensure that our students reach their goals and are led toward fulfilling lives of work, study and service.

Advisor Program
Advisor lunch During her years at St. Margaret's, every student has an advisor. The advisor serves as a communication link between the student, her family and the school.

An advisor is assigned to the student her first year. During her remaining years, the student may choose her own advisor. She will be a part of a three- to five-student advisor group.

Each trimester, advisors send home grades and comments, but that's only the beginning of their responsibility for students' academic progress and personal growth. Advisors offer advice, friendship and mentoring.

Advisors meet informally with students at least twice weekly during a seated lunch, and students and parents are encouraged to seek out their advisors whenever they feel the need. In fact, the advisor may well become one of the most important people in the student's - and parent's-life.

Learning Labs
In a supportive, small-group environment, St. Margaret's Math Lab and Writing Lab offer extra reinforcement, structure and practice while increasing students' understanding and confidence in mathematics and writing.

In labs, girls also receive guidance in time management and computer skills. Students are assigned to labs during the admission process or by their classroom teacher. Labs take place during day study hall periods.

Supervised Study

Day Study Hall - A faculty proctor monitors study hall during the academic day. In an atmosphere conducive to study, students are encouraged to prepare for their classes. They have access to computer and library resources at this time.

Evening Study Hall - Sunday through Thursday evenings, all students participate in evening study for two hours. Those with grades C and above in academic courses are granted the privilege of study in their dormitory rooms. Students who need more academic structure study in the library under supervision of adult and student proctors.

Friday Night Reinforcement - This highly structured session is required for students in academic danger. Between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., they work with a faculty member to review course expectations, develop plans of action, and begin the next week's work. Placement in this group is by invitation and reviewed every five weeks.

Weekend Study Hall - A faculty-proctored weekend study hall is scheduled every week. Teachers and advisors request that students who have not finished their work for the week or who are having academic difficulty attend this extra session. This quiet study time is available to all students.

College Counseling College Counseling
St. Margaret's prepares students for success as undergraduates in a college or university setting. In the 8th, 9th and 10th grades, girls receive guidance about the selection of courses, the taking of standardized tests (PSAT, SAT, TOEFL and ACT) and time management. Students are encouraged to surpass the minimum graduation requirements whenever possible. Throughout the last two years at St. Margaret's, students and their parents meet with the school's college counselor to talk about the process of choosing and applying to college. During Spring Family Weekend, juniors and parents participate in a College Day program offered by the college counseling staff and college professionals. In addition, juniors attend a college fair in Richmond at the end of April. St. Margaret's publishes a College Handbook that answers many questions about the college search, application and selection process. Click here for recent college acceptances.

Library
SMS Woolfolk Library St. Margaret's library is the resource and reference center of the school. Each student is encouraged to use the library for both pleasure and research-oriented class projects.

The school library contains a wealth of books, periodicals and reference materials in both print and electronic forms. The library is connected to the Internet and the campus computer network. Students can search the school's magazine and book indexes and work on papers or projects on the library's computers.

The school librarian is on hand during school hours to answer questions and assist students, and the library is open until 10 p.m. every night. For more information about the library resources, please click here.
